"5500-Umbra"

Photography caught my interest during my early childhood in Vienna and for the past 7 years it is what I do for a living, although I have been taking on various photo shootings since some 20 years. This past year in the Netherlands I have focused on art photography.

Since we moved to The Hague, I have spent much time thinking about being a „stranger" and the "feeling of home“. It became important to express my thoughts in a photo project. The final push was when another dad at the international school our son goes to said:

"It is so lovely, our children are skin color blind."

I wanted to capture this approach with my camera. Neither color of skin, nationality, religion, social standing nor sex should be visible; yet the person should be perceptible.

The project „5500-Umbra“ was born.

5500 Kelvin is the daylight temperature and Umbra means shadow in Latin

Die Idee des Zyklus „5500-Umbra“ (Tageslicht-Schatten) ist es, Menschen von unterschiedlicher Nationalität „abzulichten“.

Die Schattenbilder lösen eine Irritation aus und nehmen die Flüchtigkeit des Betrachtens. Die Serie stellt eine Einladung dar, sich mit dem Bild gedanklich auseinander zu setzen.

Das Ziel ist die Hautfarbe, das Geschlecht, die Abstammung, das Alter, die Religion und den sozialen Stand auszublenden.

An Hand der Schatten ist keine Zuordnung mehr möglich und es entsteht eine Reduktion auf den Mensch.

Der Kontrast zwischen Licht und Schatten wird durch die Ausarbeitung in Schwarzweiß weiter hervorgehoben. Das gebürstete Aluminium verleiht eine Kälte, die zusätzliche Befremdung auslöst.

Abgelichtet wurden Personen aus folgenden Nationen:

Brunei, China, Deutschland, England, Japan, Kasachstan, Niederlande, Österreich, Russland, Schweden, Schweiz, Spanien, Venezuela
